Abstract

Diary of Miss Shafei, Ding Ling's major work, as everyone knows, have shared its fate with the praise and the censure on Ding Ling. The ways of reading this work have been diverse from the political viewpoint to the feministic viewpoint since its publication. This article analyzes the narrative surface/deep structure for the reinterpretation of this work. To analyze the narrative surface structure, I devide this work into three stages and take note of Shafei's narcissistic personality, the conflict structure of ‘desire-suppression’ and suppressing mechanism of desire. Before realization of Ling Jishi’s snobbery, the suppressing mechanism of sexual desire is the sociocultural norm and expectation internalized by Shafei. In this stage, Shafei believes ego’s desire accords with that of other and mistakes sexual desire for LOVE. But after realization of Ling Jishi’s snobbery, Shafei’s ego is devided into ego who desires him and ego who refuses him and the suppressing mechanism of sexual desire is changed into personal level of self-respect. In this stage, Shafei realizes difference between the abstract demand and the concrete desire for love and experiences the process of ‘separation―accordance―separation’ between the two. This work shows us the growth and fruition of Shafei who is 20 years old and get a lung disease. Shafei’s sexual desire increases steadily and is suppressed continuously. This work, in general, has the structure of ‘desire ― suppression ― desire ― suppression …… desire ― gratification ― death’. Only if Shafei has desire and her desire is not gratified, she can get along. As Freud said, the only object to gratify desire is a death. However, this death is not a physical extinction but a spiritual rebirth. Now a girl die and is reborn as a lady. The lung disease and the death is the symbol of the rite of passage from a girl to a lady. A lady doesn’t mistake sexual desire for LOVE any more and can objectify her LOVE. Then this work is the author’s own experimental report and a Bildungsroman about Love, sex and sexual desire.
