<버드맨>(Birdman, 2014)은 아카데미(Academy Awards), 골든 글로브(Golden Globe Awards)를 비롯한 전 세계 90여 시상식에서 249개 부문의 수상 후보가 되었음은 물론 이 중 173개의 트로피를 차지함으로써그 작품성을 공히 인정받은 바 있다. <버드맨>이 이처럼 작품성을 인정받은 데에는 주제적 측면뿐만 아니라 영화 전체가 싱글 쇼트 영화(single shot film)인 것처럼 연출된 롱 테이크 기교, 즉 싱글 쇼트 효과(single shot effect)가 중요한 역할을 하였음을 부인할 수 없다. 이에 이 연구는 <버드맨>에서 재현되는 싱글 쇼트 효과의 미학적 기능을 살펴보는 데에 그 목적을 두고, 답을 구하기 위해 롱 테이크 미학에 대한 문헌 연구를 토대로 롱 테이크 기법과 사실주의와의 관련성을살펴보았으며, 이후 이를 바탕으로 <버드맨>에서 사실주의 미학이 명확하게 드러나는 장면들과 사실주의적 환상을 재현하는 장면들에 대한 세밀한 텍스트 분석을 실시하였다.
Abstract
Birdman (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2014) has been officially recognized the cinematic quality by receiving 173 trophies out of 249 nominations of 90 film awards, including Academy and Golden Globe Awards. The fact that the film's stylistic aspect like the single shot effect as well as thematic aspects has performed important role in the above recognition is undeniable. The single shot effect can be defined as the trick of the long take representation that a whole film is represented as a single shot film. The purpose of this study is to grasp the aesthetic functions of the single shot effect in Birdman. For this, this study has reviewed the literatures about the long take aesthetics, examined the relationship between the long take and realism, and performed the close textual analysis of a few representative scenes. The scenes are consisted of the scenes of realism, in which the realist aesthetics are clearly shown, and the scenes of fantasy, by which the realistic illusion is represented.
