Abstract
This article explains VR (Virtual Reality) technologies and discusses their implications for the art of cinema. First it points out that interactivity, rather than immersion, is the fundamental element of VR. Then, after briefly surveying the history of VR, it explains technological issues that can be of interest to film students and researchers. First is the problem of frame rate, that is, the problem of updating VR display upon the user’s movement in real-time. It is stressed that this problem does not arise in live-action VR cinema. Second is the issue of “stitching” the images from the separate cameras together. The main problem stems from the fact that the cameras' viewpoints do not coincide. Third is the problem of representing 3D. The current stereoscopic 3D images suffer from convergenceaccommodation conflict, but the new light-field photography promises a healthier future.
