Abstract
This paper presents an examination of the pre-treatment state, dismantlement, assembly, and restoration results, as well as the conservation treatment processes, of armor parts (untypical helmet, vertical plate helmet, neck guard, vertical plate armor, and chamfron) excavated from the Sara-ri site in Gyeongju. The study also searched for ways to restore these armor parts as closely as possible to their original state by taking into account their place and function within the entire armor set. The conservation treatment processes of armor include collecting in the field, dismantling, examination before treatment, cleaning, desalinization, drying, reinforcement, assembly, restoration, patina treatment, and finishing. In order to restore the different armor parts to their original state, the following measures are required. In the case of the vertical plate helmet, the miganbu plates, including the center plates, need to be checked, the right and left plates need to be distinguished, the jipan and bokbal must be connected naturally, bolgarigae must be restored so that the right and left parts are symmetrical, and the hyeonsugong needs to be checked. As for the neck guard, it is necessary to first check the jeonghubangi plates. There are two approaches to its restoration: one is to connect only on the basis of the existing holes in the plates, and the other is to restore it into a symmetrical shape even if this requires some curvature adjustment. As for vertical plate armor, one can restore it to its original state by collecting the pieces in the field using urethane foam and dismantling it safely in order to distinguish the front and back and check the different types of vertical plate armor and the forms of each component. This makes it possible to figure out the entire shape and combination of the vertical plate armor. It is important to obtain an overall understanding of the structure using X-ray photography, and even the smallest details, such as the method of connecting the jipan, the technique used in the manufacturing process, its purpose, and traces of wear, must be noted for restoration. In the case of the chamfron, it is important to maintain right and left symmetry during restoration by taking into account the degree of chaeng loss. A careful approach must also be taken to maintain the threedimensional structure of the face cover and the bolgarigae hinge must also be checked. A set of armor becomes complete by assembling and connecting various plates. As there are many components, it is often the case that the armor cannot be restored due to the loss of some components and because the junction sides cannot be checked. Therefore collecting the artifact with urethane foam in the field, determining the accurate conservation treatment direction by examining its condition before treatment, guaranteeing safe dismantlement and continuous junction at the conservation treatment room, and basing restoration on objective grounds are key requirements in order to restore armor as close as possible to its original state.
