Abstract
This article suggests some criteria for distinguishing real lithic tools from pseudotools,a topic of debate which has been lacking in Korean archaeology. After being deposited in the ground, artifacts are altered by various agents in the post-depositional process. Trampling is one of the important agents that transform lithic tools. This behavior can be defined as the unintended damage of lithic tools due to walking. Vein quartz is one of the most utilized of raw materials in the Korea peninsula. In this experimental study, we disposed of vein quartz flakes on the clay sector and on the well weathered Precambrian sector (sandy), and then walked on the lithic tools for an hour. The observed features are summarized as the follows. First, the rate of transformation for the lithic tools depends on the hardness of the soil (i.e. the external factor). Generally, the lithic tools on the clay area reacted more sensitively to trampling than the tools on the well weathered Precambrian area. Secondly, lithic transformation may be influenced by factors of the lithic material itself, such as brittleness, internal cracking, homogeneity of texture, density, and tool size. Transformation depends significantly on rock fragility and the amount of internal cracks, although quartz is a hard rock. Thirdly, fractures and damages to the tool edges are more numerous in the case of the vein quartz tools that the pseudo-retouched tools. Trampling makes several transformation traces on the nerves or backs of one piece, and the pseudo-tools are often accompanied by the other traces of transformation. Fourth, in the case of the pseudo-tools, the dimensions of the retouching negatives are quite small in most cases. With regard to this, we must bear in mind that it is very hard to retouch the edge of quartz flakes to make micro-retouched tools and the utility of microretouched tools in vein quartz must also be questioned. Fifth, in Europe where flint was the most widely used lithic material, identifying the type of retouching negative can be a useful way to distinguish real tools from pseudo-tools but this criterion is not useful in Korea.
