본 논문은 프리츠 랑의 영화 <엠>(1931), <사형집행인도 죽는다>(1943), <블루 가디니아>(1953), <빅 히트>(1953)에 나타난 개인과 집단의 재현 양상을 중심으로 영화가 포착하는 시대의 단면에 주목한다. 1930년대에서1950년대까지, 약 10년의 차이를 두고 제작된 네 편의 영화는 랑의 작품전반을 관통하는 시대적, 주제적 특성을 드러낸다. <엠>은 어느 살인자와 그를 추적하는 공동체 구성원들의 묘사를 통해 바이마르 공화국의 시대상을 조명하고, 나치의 부상을 징후적으로 포착한다. <사형집행인도죽는다>는 랑이 나치즘을 피해 미국으로 이주한 이후 제작한 반나치 영화 가운데 하나로, 이념과 이념, 국가와 국가, 집단과 집단 사이의 첨예한대립을 그린다. 할리우드에서 활동을 이어가는 동안 여러 편의 필름 누아르를 연출했던 랑은 <블루 가디니아>와 <빅 히트>에서 미국 사회에드리운 어둠에 주목했다. 두 작품은 고립된 개인과 익명적 사회의 문제를 다룬다. 랑의 영화에서 나타나는 개인과 집단의 재현은 집단이 개인을 추적하거나(<엠>), 집단과 집단이 충돌하거나(<사형집행인도 죽는다>), 집단으로부터 개인이 고립되는 (<블루 가디니아>, <빅 히트>) 양상을 보인다. 이와 같은개인과 집단의 재현 양상에서 주목할 수 있는 점은 각 작품이 배경으로하는 시대상과 영화적 재현의 양상이 상응한다는 점이다. 이는 또한 나치의 부상을 중심으로 전과 후로 나뉘는 랑 자신의 영화적 터전과 삶의궤적, 더 나아가서는 서구 사회를 관통하는 격변의 시기와 밀접한 연관성을 보인다.
Abstract
This paper focuses on the fragments the age captured by the films, focusing on the representation of individuals and groups in Fritz Lang's films, M (1931), Hangmen Also Die! (1943), The Blue Gardenia (1953), and The Big Heat (1953). From the 1930s to the 1950s, these films reveal the periodic and thematic characteristics that penetrate Lang's works. M sheds light on the era of the Weimar Republic through its portrayal of a murderer and the community members who hunt him down, and captures the rise of the Nazis as a sign. Hangmen Also Die! is one of the anti-Nazi films Lang made after fleeing Nazism to the United States, and depicts the sharp confrontation between ideology and ideology, nation and nation, and group and group. Lang, who directed several film noirs during his career in Hollywood, turned his attention to the darkness on American society in The Blue Gardenia and The Big Heat, both of which deal with isolated individuals and anonymous societies. The representation of individuals and groups in Lang's films shows a pattern in which groups track individuals (M), groups and groups collide (Hangmen Also Die!), or isolated individuals (The Blue Gardenia, The Big Heat). What is noteworthy in the representation of such individuals and groups is that they correspond to the time period in which each film is set. This is also closely related to Lang's own cinematic base and life trajectory, which is divided into before and after the rise of the Nazis, and furthermore, to the period of upheaval penetrating Western society.
