Abstract

Poet Ku Sang was born in Seoul in 1919 and passed away in 2004. He is regarded as a pioneer of the serial poetry form in Korean literary history and published numerous works in this format, including “Poem of the Scorched Earth”, “Field Diary”, “The Crow”, “The River of Christ Paul”, “Even the Knots on Quince Trees” and “Childish Splendidness”. Among these, “The Crow”, published in 1981, was written at a time when demands for democratization were intensifying due to the deepening of political authoritarianism. “The Crow” expresses Ku Sang’s consciousness of crisis against the backdrop of political and socio-economic turmoil. “The River of Christ Paul” reflects his poetic reasoning on continuity. Through the river, he contemplates eternity and seeks to overcome crises by embodying non-confrontational unity through the flowing water. For him, unbroken continuity was the path to transcend all negativity and reach a positive world. Furthermore, in the poetry “Childish Splendidness”, Ku Sang encapsulates key moments of modern Korean history, including the Japanese colonial period, national division, the Korean War, the April 19 Revolution, the May 16 ruling of the new military, and the democratization movement, etc. Through this, he sought to convey a message of crisis awareness and its resolution to future generations. Ku Sang’s series of poems - “The Crow”, “The River of Christ Paul” and “Childish Splendidness” - each represent his consciousness of crisis, his poetic reasoning of continuity as a means of overcoming it, and the literary and social utility of passing on such awareness on to future generations. This paper seeks to demonstrate, through the work-theoretical analysis, that this perspective can be established.
