Abstract

This paper explores the alternate history novel genre as it emerged during a specific period, examining its development of aesthetic discourses and methodologies in connection with the intellectual climate of that era. Alternate history novels function as a form of speculative fiction that challenges existing collective memories through historical counterfactuals and aims to reconstruct new narratives. Notably, the genre adopts a social-scientific character, engaging in materialist-evolutionary imagination and proposing alternatives to foster a progressive worldview. Specifically, it is characterized by the creation of new aesthetics stemming from a materialist stance that transforms human perception and perspectives, advancing themes and solutions wherein the human understanding of material conditions can reshape communities. In conclusion, alternate history novels exhibit a unique genre methodology and profound significance rooted in evolutionary thought, developing a distinct aesthetic derived from scientific imagination. Their aesthetic value lies in their pursuit of practical rationality and the realization of reason, alongside presenting an organic view of history that anticipates future progressive trajectories through historical imagination. Furthermore, a crucial role of this genre, akin to broader science fiction, is its capacity to posit multiple possible worlds and identities.
