Abstract
Focusing on "Children", Korea's first pure children's magazine founded in 1923, this study examined the pattern of readers' participation in modern children's literature and the meaning of the readers' community formed through it. From the beginning of its foundation, the "Children" 誌 organized various participation sections such as phenomenal literature, independent dialogue rooms, independent photography, and humor to induce children's readers to directly participate in creation and communication. This editing method was a medium that embodied Bang Jung-hwan's educational philosophy, "Children's Independence and Common Growth," and was a creative strategy that combined commerciality and enlightenment. Correspondence between readers, formation of local readers' associations, and name granting formed a symbolic identity of "a community of 100,000 readers" and contributed to the vitalization of the Cheondogyo Boys' Movement and local youth association. The editorial staff internalized modern authoring ethics by emphasizing the use of real names, prohibition of plagiarism, and childlike creation, and readers accepted this and voluntarily defended creative ethics and criticized plagiarism of others. The "Children" 誌 reader community was a place for modern children's subjects that shared language and behavioral norms, equality of title, and national awareness beyond simple reading groups. In conclusion, the "Children" 誌 played a pivotal role in the spread of modern consciousness and the establishment of the children's literature system through the media, and the achievements of institutionalizing reader participation, establishing a community identity, and spreading creative ethics continued to have an impact on Korean modern literature as a whole. By the 1920s, modern ideas rapidly spread through new media, centering on the younger generation. "Children" 誌 was at the center of the conflict of values between the two propositions: the acceptance of modern thinking and the promotion of national consciousness. "Children" 誌 was the central medium that imprinted the new generational consciousness, and the readership was also the thickest.
