Abstract

Discussions on care necessitate a continuous dialogue that addresses inequalities across gender, generation, and class while also considering the complex intertwinement of normative, social, economic, and psychological factors. Recent Korean literary works have actively engaged with the diverse forms of family structures and the corresponding issues of care. This paper examines “Love and Defect” by Ye So-yeon, “The Adventures of Aunt Sand, Mokkyung, and Mukyung” by Lee Mi-sang, and “The Experimental Film Made by Sook-hee” by Jeon Ha-young to explore how the lives of middle-aged, unmarried women are represented in contemporary female authors' novels, particularly in relation to family and care. Furthermore, this study investigates how these works experiment with new forms of solidarity among women that transcend traditional family boundaries. These novels critically challenge South Korea’s deeply entrenched familism, which forces care responsibilities to rely primarily on private relationships, while also exposing the gendered exploitation within familial structures. At the same time, they probe the potential for women’s solidarity based on equitable and reciprocal relationships of mutual care. In Love and Defect, Soon-jung, Min-ae, and Seong-hye construct a precarious yet intimate emotional labor community, bound together by love, obsession, resentment, and compassion. In The Adventures of Aunt Morae, Mokkyung, and Mukyung, the characters share an aristocratic consciousness that rejects gendered exploitation, thereby fostering a strong bond based on their mutual recognition of their "precious incompetence" (p. 278). Meanwhile, The Experimental Film Made by Sook-hee envisions a community of retired single women who become each other’s “family” (p. 133), reflecting a form of alternative family that is already being practiced in reality. Although these female-centered communities, whether based on familial or friendship ties, may not always serve as perfectly harmonious sites of care, they nonetheless present alternative spaces that resist the heteronormative gendered exploitation of care. These narratives reaffirm that gender inequality remains a fundamental challenge in the discourse surrounding care, highlighting its persistent centrality in contemporary social structures.
