이동주 시인은 1950년대 시문학사에서 민요의 정서와 리듬을 통해 우리시의 전통과 독자적 보편성을 갖추려 노력했던 시인이다. 그는 당대의 시대적 정서를 전통적 관점과 어법으로 수용하면서 우리 시와 전통과 민족성의 운율을 작품으로 지켜냈다. 본 연구는 유희요로 알려져 있는 강강술래와 제의(祭儀)인 기우제를 수용한 이동주 시인이 어떻게 이를 변용하고, 자신의 시세계를 구축하였는지 시창작방법론의 측면에서 살펴보고자 한다. 그의 시가 단순한 현실 회피나 복고적인 한의 정서가 아니라, 현실 인식과 극복의 논리에서 자신의 독자적 방식으로 전개되었음을 살피고, 유미적 한의 주제와 민속적 가락을 잘 조화시키며 한국 시가의 전통적 정서를 추구하였는지를 중점적으로 살폈다. 1950년대 한국 시문학 전통의 맥을 이은 이동주는 전통적인 율격과 정서, 그리고 민속적 소재 등을 동원하여 전통시의 맥락을 현대적으로 계승하였으며, 단순히 고전적 상상력의 복고주의에 머물지 않고 당대의 시대상황과 긴장감을 갖고 대응 관계를 가지려 했다. 따라서 이러한 창작방법론적 연구를 통해 우리 시문학사에서 전통서정시를 지향했던 시인들의 계보와 시세계를 검토하고 이들의 전체적 맥락을 체계화하는 작업에 바탕이 될 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
Poet Lee Dong-joo was a poet in the 1950s who sought to integrate the traditional and distinct universality of Korean poetry through the emotions and rhythms of folk songs. He endeavored to preserve the rhythm of Korean poetry and tradition by embracing the contemporary emotions of his time from a traditional perspective and diction. This study aims to examine, from the perspective of poetic creation methodology, how he constructed and utilized his poetic world using traditional plays like Ganggangsullae and rituals such as the rain ritual. It was observed that his poetry was not mere escapism or nostalgia for past sorrows but was developed through his unique methods within the logic of realistic awareness and overcoming. Furthermore, he pursued the traditional emotion of Korean poetry by harmonizing aesthetic themes of sorrow with folk melodies. Continuing the lineage of traditional Korean poetry from the 1950s, Lee Dong-joo employed traditional metrics, emotions, and themes to modernly interpret and carry on the context of traditional poetry. It is understood that his classical imagination did not remain merely retrogressive but engaged closely with the contemporary societal situation. Through this, it is expected to form the basis for reviewing the lineage and poetic worlds of poets who aimed for traditional lyric poetry and systematizing the overall context.
