This paper is a study of Julia Kristeva’s concept of 'abject' in relation to pastoral counseling. According to Kristeva, ‘abject’ is defined as a change in inward psychology, which suddenly occurs at the moment when the infant turns from the maternal space to the paternal symbolic. At this moment the infant gives up its identification with the mother and through this process of rejection, it begins to construct its own identity apart from the mother. Kristeva’s realm of ‘abject’ presupposes the negative aspects of maternity described as ‘badness’ or ‘unpleasantness’ that is hidden behind the ‘goodness’ or ‘greatness’. Her basic argument is based on several aspects of maternity. This paper attempts to explain the pastoral theological perspective of ‘abject’ as another approach. This study, the arguments of Matthew Fox’s and Meister Eckhart’s descriptions of humanity and God as ‘nothingness’ were selected. They share the idea that the human spirit and soul are born from a ground of darkness, therefore, humanity in theory faces pain in the darkness and let’s it go rather than eliminating self-darkness. Eckhart calls this process of a human proceeding toward God, ‘breakthrough’ at which point a new spirit is created and humanity beings.
