멜라니 클라인의 우울적 자리를 넘어서: 초월적 자리와 영적 자리에 대한 고찰

초록

본 연구는 멜라니 클라인의 두 자리 이론이 안고 있는 한계점에서 출발하였다. 두 자리 이론은 임상적으로 매우 유용한 개념임에도 불구하고 우울적 자리가 지나치게 포괄적으로 사용되면서 이론적 혼란을 야기했을 뿐만 아니라, 우울적 자리의 과업들이 완성된 이후의 발달에 대한 설명이 부재한다. 새로운 이론의 필요성에 부응하여 제임스 그롯슈타인과 닐 마이젤스는 각각 초월적 자리, 영적 자리라는 개념들을 창안했다. 그롯슈타인의 초월적 자리는 윌프레드 비온의 ‘O’개념을 수용하여 기존의 두 자리 이론을 넘어서는 패러다임을 제시하였다. 마이젤스의 영적 자리에서는 우울적 자리의 훈습이 충분히 다루어진 이후에 나타나는 정서적 특징들과 그에 대한 방어기제들을 묘사하였다. 본 연구에서는 이 새로운 개념들을 비교·분석하였으며 클라인의 두 자리 이론, 변형, 초월적 자리, 영적 자리에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 각각을 진자의 운동으로 도식화하였다. 이런 이론적 이해를 성경 속 인물인 야곱의 생애와 대상관계의 변형에 적용하였다. 두개의 주요 사건인 벧엘에서 꿈을 꾼 것과 얍복강 나루에서 낯선 이와 씨름한 것을 초월적·영적 경험으로 보고 분석하였다. 벧엘에서의 꿈은 편집-분열적 자리에서 우울적 자리로의 변형을 나타내는 초월적, 영적 경험으로 볼 수 있었지만 초월적 자리와 영적 자리의 진입으로 보기는 어려웠다. 반면에 얍복강 나루에서의 씨름에서는 하나님과의 만남으로 초월적 자리와 영적 자리에 진입하는 모습을 찾을 수 있었다. 이 연구를 통해 목회상담에서 우울적 자리를 넘어서는 영적 경험과 발달을 개념화할 수 있는 새로운 이론적 틀을 제공하려고 한다.

Abstract

This study started with examining the limitations of Melanie Klein’s position theory. Although it has been proven clinically useful, the depressive position has been a source of theoretical confusion, as it was used excessively as an umbrella term. Moreover, it lacks a framework for further development after the tasks of the depressive position are completed. In response to this need, James Grotstein and Neil Maizels developed the concepts of the transcendent position and spiritual position, respectively. Grotstein’s transcendent position embraces Bion’s concept of ‘O’ and provides a paradigm that is beyond Klein’s dual position theory. Maizel’s spiritual position describes the emotional characteristics and defenses that appear after a thorough working through of the depressive position. These concepts were not only examined and compared, but in order to help comprehension, diagrams depicting a pendulum movement were schematized for Klein’s dual positions, transformation, transcendent position, and spiritual position. This theoretical understanding was applied to the biblical case of Jacob. Two crucial events, Jacob’s dream at Bethel and his wrestling at Jabbok River, were analyzed as transcendent, spiritual events. The dream at Bethel was found to represent transformation from the paranoid-schizoid position to the depressive position, which could be viewed as a transcendent, spiritual experience but not as an entry to the transcendent or spiritual position. On the other hand, Jacob’s encounter with God at Jabbok River was found to be an entry into the transcendent and spiritual position. This study aims to provide new possibilities of theoretical application for pastoral counselors working with spiritual experiences that go beyond the depressive position.
