Abstract

The year of 2019 is the commemorative and meaningful centennial of the March 1st Declaration of Independence Movement which occurred throughout the nation on the first day of March in 1919. Hence, I shall examine the implications of pastoral theology in the movement, and ponder over the future directions Korean churches of today's modern society should take in this article. In this regard, I suggest specific guidelines regarding what to do in the process of Cchristian education. Furthermore, I study the March 1st Declaration of Independence Movement especially in terms of the from a psychopathological perspective. I am about to analyze the movement to adduce evidence that the movement was neither merely a struggle nor an evasion as a result of a pathological expression stemming from emotional distress. I also show in this article that the movement was neither an inferiority complex nor a mass neurosis and paranoid episode that sprung from psychological fixation. This is briefly explained by the fact that the movement was a peace movement which that took on a nonviolent and nonresistant aspect trend towards liberation. Based on the analysis, I am about to establish that the independence movement was psychologically an expression of catharsis, and how that such movement was possible through spiritual understanding. In turn, this paper is intended to show that the independence movement, with regard to pastoral theology, was a moment of transformation realized by the sense of creation and transcendence established through repetitive faith training. On the basis of such analysis, I investigate the characteristics of the Pyongyang Revival Movement from by figuring out the various kinds of faith training and education which that contributed as to the spiritual force of the independence movement. Just as the early missionaries, Deming, Swallen, Gale, Pierson, et al., testified, the Korean churches at the time endeavored to experience 'the Word becoming flesh,' as an attempt to follow Jesus. Korean churches practiced the attempt through the Revival Movement, or more specifically, Bbible classes and recitations. Such spiritual understandings prevented the nation from experiencing a traumatic stigmata of the nation from pathologically happenings as a result. One of the purposes of this study is to illumine the independence movement where the Word has embraced and healed the agony and injuries of both an individual and the whole nation. This study is intended to propose a remedy for the crisis situation where Christianity is criticized and denounced by many others, where the church is unfortunately a target of eradication in terms ofdue to corruption and where it is often ostracized by the next generation, which is responsible to lead the future Korean church. Under the Reformed Theology slogan, ecclesia reformata semper reformanda of Reformed Theology, I emphasize the necessity of repentance, restoration and getting back to the Bbible throughout this article. Thus, I ascertain that the March 1st Declaration of Independence Movement was a unification and embracement of every class, and every generation. Every political and religious belief was accepted and regionalism was denied. And I explore alternatives and directions how whereby churches of Korea could make create a the world where everyone is joyful for each other, everyone attentively listens to each other's story, and everyone respects each other. Furthermore, the intention of this study is not only to solve the current problems that lie in Korean churches, but also to provide a spiritual understanding to solve every social issue including conflicts between generations, class, political beliefs and regions.
