Abstract

This study analyzes that the background and motives of direct investment of Russian companies to CIS region are politically coincide with the purpose of Russian government to control this region and the economic purpose of each companies by several examples. Especially, the reason why this study focuses on the direct investment of Russian companies to CIS region is that Russian government continuously expresses the exclusive interests to CIS region based on their past history and the intend of Russian government is projecting to Russian companies. Many Russian companies started to go abroad because of global economic boom and breakthrough of limitation in Russian domestic market after 2000 years. And Putin administration controlled tightly Russian companies by projecting political and economic intend of government to CIS and this intensified the investment of companies to this region. This article analyzes that the intend of Russian government to control CIS region worked as a factor of Russian companies FDI to this region based on politically reciprocal understanding by human network of government and companies. The political intend of government can be easily penetrated to the companies especially government controls many aspects of country where the boundary is unclear as in Russia. As its theoretical background for an analysis on Russian companies,Gazprom and Lukoil are involving in many gas and oil projects in CIS region and through this they can integrate value chains by internalization of resource trading. Telecommunication companies as Vimpelcom and MTS are seeking new markets in CIS region based on their technologies and capital as firm specific advantages and UES of Russia could maximize efficiency by realization of economies of scale through investment to CIS region. Russian companies are already in the level of multinational companies regarding the scales and activities, but to survive in an open environment in which globalization becoming, they should develop the system of decision making and long-term partnership with host countries based not on unilateral and governmental power, but on bilateral and companies’ interests.
