Abstract

LED industry is currently recognized as one of the major growth industries. LED lighting industry is especially expected as the key growth industry as it has very close relations with green growth, low carbon and well-being which are gaining more importance. Accordingly, governments are making policies regarding LED and companies are increasing its investment in LED. However, government's current policies on LED seems limited as they are not systematic or strategic. Therefore, this article suggests the direction of Korean LED policies based on Porter's diamond model. This article is based on the interviews with professionals in LED industry and analyzed LED lighting industry applying Porter's diamond theory. The result of examining Korean LED lighting industry based on Porter's 4 factors are as follows. The major problems of Korean LED lighting industry are lack of original technology, shortage of demand, and the absence of government strategy. Therefore, government's LED policy should be focused on development of original technology and on driving LED lighting demand increase in public sector. Also, the result shows that the government needs to establish more clear goal and objective regarding LED.
