Abstract

In this paper, I insist that there was a process of forming a nation before the formation of a nation-state in the Turkic cultural area of Central Eurasia and based on this, national formation was carried out by itself under the Russian Empire. I would like to pay attention to the Jadid movement as a key factor in the process of forming this nation. The Jadid movement, formed across a surprisingly wide range of Turkic cultures, was basically a pan-Turkish movement in the process of developing from a kind of enlightenment movement to a political movement, but clearly separated into the boundaries of each ethnic unit and developed into a progressive nationalist movement. Through the national movement triggered by Jadid at each ethnic level, we would like to examine the history of dividing each boundary and moving forward to the construction of a modern national state. This paper expects that a model based on modernism in the formation of ethnic and ethnic states can paradoxically complement weaknesses that can ignore or overlook the uniqueness and specificity of each ethnic unit.
