본 논문에서는 발트해 지역의 역사적 배경과 에스토니아를 포함한 인근 국가들의 관계를 다루며, 이를 통해 발트해 지역의 다양한 국가와 민족 간의 상호 작용과 경쟁을 반영하는 패권 다툼에 대해 고찰한다. 이를 위해, 1219년에서 1721년 사이에 발생한 주변의 패권 다툼에 초점을 맞추어 발트해 지역의 역사를 시기와 국가에 집중하여 면밀하게 들여다보고자 한다. 13세기 초, 덴마크와 독일 십자군 및 기사단들이 발트해 북부의 무역과 무역로를 장악하기 위해 에스토니아의 땅을 나누어 소유했다. 이후, 대규모의 반란이 일어나 발데마르 4세는 땅을 튜턴 기사단에 매각했다. 1346년, 에스토니아를 튜턴 기사단에 매각함으로써 독일이 현재의 에스토니아와 라트비아 북부를 포함하는 리보니아의 유일한 주인이 되었다. 중세 시대에는 독일 한자동맹 및 스웨덴과의 내부 불화와 전쟁으로 특징지어진다. 16세기에 스웨덴은 발트해 지역에서 강력한 군사적 영향력을 행사하였고, 급기야 17세기는 스웨덴이 에스토니아를 정식으로 통치하는 시기를 맞게 되었다. 그렇지만 18세기에 스웨덴도 러시아 제국에 패배하고, 에스토니아는 러시아 제국의 지배를 받게 되었다. 본 연구는 발트해 지역의 역사적 배경과 에스토니아를 포함한 인근 국가들의 관계를 다루는 것 외에도, 이러한 연구를 통해 발트해 지역의 현재 정치적, 경제적, 문화적 측면을 이해하는 데 유용한 정보를 제공할 것이다. 나아가 이러한 정보는 발트해 지역의 다양한 국가와 민족 간의 상호 작용과 경쟁을 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 역할을 할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper covers the historical background to understand the relations of countries in the Baltic Sea to examine hegemonic struggles that reflected the interaction and competition in the region, especially centering in Estonia. For this, the hegemonic struggles took place between 1210 and 1721. In the early 13th century, Danish and German crusaders and knights carved up Estonian land control trade and trade routes in the northern Baltic Sea. After a massive revolt, King Valdemar IV sold the land to the Teutonic Knights. In 1346, the sale of Estonia to the Teutonic Order mad Germany the sole owner of Livonia, which included modern~day Estonia and northern Latvia. The Middle Ages were marked by internal feuds and wars with the German Hanseatic League and Sweden. In the 16th century, Sweden exerted a strong military influence in the Baltic region, and the 17th century saw the formalization of Swedish rule over Estonia. However, in the 18th century, Sweden was defeated by the Russian Empire and Estonia came under Russian control. In addition to covering the historical background of the region and the relations amongst the countries in the region, centering in Estonia, this study will provide useful information for understanding the current political, economic, and cultural aspects of the Baltic Sea region. Furthermore, this information will be crucial in understanding the interaction and competition between the various countries and peoples of the Baltic Sea region.
