INTERNATIONALIZATION OF HIGHER EDUCATION: PARTNERSHIPS IN RESEARCH AND PRACTICE IN LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS STUDIES

Around the world, institutions of higher learning are undergoing substantial changes due to globalization trends. Changing views and expectations about higher education have led to new roles and challenges with changes seen mostly in the following: changes in the university students, changes in the professoriate, changes in academic administration and internationalization. In this paper, internationalisation efforts and partnerships in the context of Malaysia and in particular at the University of Malaya (UM), the oldest university in the country, and its Faculty of Languages and Linguistics is reported. Focus will be on linguistics and language studies encompassing three key areas: research, curriculum and staff/students giving examples to illustrate each one.
