이 논문은 호라티우스 서정시집의 첫 번째 작품, 마에케나스 헌정시에관한 베일리(Bailey)의 추정 제안을 반박하는데 그 목적이 있다. 베일리의 주장에 따르면, 헌정시는 34행에 이르러 시적 정점에 도달하는 바, 시의 마지막 두 행(35-36행)은 오히려 사족처럼 붙어 있으므로 시적 정점에부합하도록 수정되어야 한다는 것이다. 베일리는 자신의 수정 제안에서특히 35행의 마지막 단어를 “inseres”에서 “inserens”로 바꾸어놓았는데, 우리는 이렇게 수정함으로써 마에케나스와 호라티우스의 우정관계에 대한 착안점을 소멸시켜 버리고, 결과적으로 헌정시로서의 본래적 목적을달성하지 못한다고 생각한다. 또한 ‘선호목록시’라는 독특한 형식에 비추어 보더라도, 시의 첫 행에 언급된 마에케나스로 마지막 행에서 되돌아오면서 시적 정점에 이르고 있는 것으로 보인다. 또한 첫 번째 시집의 첫시로서 이 시가, 다른 모든 호라티우스의 책들과 비교할 때, 마에케나스에게 헌정하려는 의도를 가지고 있음은 이론의 여지가 전혀 없이 분명하다.
Abstract
This article is a disputation, regarding the last two verses of the dedication ode to Maecenas, over Bailey's conjectural suggestion, especially that inseres in verse 35. be emended to inserens. Bailey estimated that the ode makes its climax just before the last two verses. But his conjecture, I think, resulted from the failure of communis opinio, that the poem has its purpose on the dedication to Maecenas, and that the poet and the addressee have developed a extraordinary relation where man must make use of the word friendship. In this sense it seems natural that the priamel ends, as handed down by tradition, with the recommendation of the addressee in the last lines, whom Horace has forgotten from the verse 3. onward after the beginning vocative.
