The purpose of this paper is to investigate the opacity in pre-weak syllable tone 3 sandhi and retroflex suffixation of Standard Chinese(SC, henceforth). For this, after classifying the opacity phenomena in SC, I will present the opacity problem. Following that, I will analyze the opacity in pre-weak syllable tone 3 sandhi and retroflex suffixation of SC within the framework of McCarthy(2009)’s recent proposal, Optimality Theory with Candidate Chains (OT-CC, henceforth), which incorporates inter-candidate derivational information with PREC(edence) constraints(A, B). This paper is organized as follows. Section Ⅰ provides introductory remark about this paper. Section Ⅱ presents opaque interaction induced by counterbleeding and counterfeeding order and outlines the problem of opacity effects under OT. In Section Ⅲ, after providing an introduction of OT-CC. I then will analyze the opacity in pre-weak syllable tone 3 sandhi and retroflex suffixation of SC resulting from rule overapplication within the framework of OT-CC. Section Ⅳ is a concluding summary.
