Faith is a constitutive human experience; in particular, it is a concentration of material culture through the psychological dimension of life. The way faith is formed and developed into human phenomena, thus, reflects the material cultural facilities and human lives of a certain society. Archaeological evidencehas shown us that there was a systemic theological base during the Shang dynasty that included oracle bone scripts detailing rituals. This essay investigates myths, legends and archaeological studies of the worship styles and rituals of the Shang dynasty, in particular examining oracle bone scripts about emperors. The essay demonstrates how people’s respect for their ancestors and gods illuminates the socio-cultural life of the ancient Chinese, allowing us to rediscover the historical importance of every sector of spiritual life.
