Abstract

Eugen Ruge’s In Times of Fading Light and Hwang Sok-yong’s The Guest share common ground in their multifaceted exploration of how ideology shapes individual identity and determines the fate of communities, while also addressing the conflicts arising from it and the possibilities for healing and reconciliation. In Ruge’s novel, the first generation of the Umnitzer family fully internalizes socialist ideology, which ultimately reveals its limitations through their alienation from reality. In contrast, the second-generation figure Kurt confronts the violence of the system and seeks reform from a critical perspective. Upon realizing he is terminally ill, the third generation, Alexander, begins to reflect on the past and embarks on a process of reconciliation. He attempts to understand the ideological misunderstandings between generations. This highlights the significance of personal introspection and memory in bridging ideological and generational divides. Hwang Sok-yong’s The Guest depicts the tragedy of the Sincheon massacre during the Korean War, illustrating ideological violence and collective trauma. The novel use fantastic realism and the narrative framework of Jinjeonogwigut (a traditional shamanic ritual) to attempt to heal the living and console the dead, and finally seeks the possibility of forgiveness and reconciliation beyond extreme ideological conflicts. Despite their different historical contexts, both works deeply examine the interaction between ideology and the individual and demonstrate literature’s potential to contribute to healing and reconciliation. This study, therefore, explores ways to overcome the existential crises and turmoil caused by ideological conflicts through the lens of German and Korean division literature and ultimately considers how literature internalizes historical and social change while deepening reflections on human nature.
