Abstract

This article defines the film "Next Sohee," which depicts the story of Kim Sohee, a special-purpose high school student who works as a temporary, short-term, non-regular worker at a customer center as a field intern and ultimately commits suicide, as a kind of "social autopsy" performed through the medium of film. It elucidates how the emotional signs emanating from the protagonist Sohee—such as silence, actions, and facial expressions—can serve as a medium for reflection on the hierarchization and impossibility of communication. To this end, the paper reconsiders the social positionality of young workers within the interrelationships of actual reality (social data), experiential accounts (archival data), and cinematic representation (film content). Furthermore, it analyzes how the complex identities of youth, students, women, and workers serve as oppressive agents that reinforce the hierarchical structures at work in schools and workplaces, distorting and refracting the voices of the subjects, thereby dismantling them into meaningless, thus executing a politics of enunciation. This article clarifies the gradual and layered process of losing linguistic, social, and physical vitality that led to the protagonist Kim So-hee's suicide. Furthermore, it analyzes that each vital element was not voluntarily relinquished by the subject but rather deprived by society. Therefore, Sohee’s suicide can be seen as a sacrifice of anti-life ‘politics of speech’ and a ‘massive murder’ inflicted on a female student, a non-regular worker, by society as a whole, in a microscopic, gradual, and repeated manner. This article understands this journey of clarification as a symbolic ‘social autopsy’ mediated by film, elucidating how film can serve as a device for an ‘affective lens’ that captures and reflects on the structural absurdity of society, as well as a mechanism for empathic biopolitics.
