초록
Democratization consolidated in South Korean society influenced North Korea’s per-ception and strategy toward South Korea. North Korea paid attention to candlelight vigils by South Korean citizens since the 2000s. When the candlelight vigil was held after Ko-rean girls were crushed to death by U.S. armored vehicles, North Korea instigated the demonstration to be connected to a massive anti-American demonstration in Pyongyang. And when the candlelight vigil against the impeachment of President Roh Mu Hyun was held, they maximized their hostility to the United States. Meanwhile, candlelight vigil against U.S. beef import scandal and President Park Geun Hye were interpreted as anti-government struggles for democratization. However, since the resignation of the President Park, the coverage of the North Korean media on South Korea’s political situation has drastically decreased. They seemed to be concerned about the impact of the news on North Korean society. North Korea’s perception to each candlelight vigil revealed differences depending on inter-Korean relations, international conditions, and inter situation in North Korea at that time.
