This study analyzes articles from Joseon Nyeoseong and Rodong Sinmun to explore North Korea’s makeup culture and cosmetics policy. The North Korean authorities commend women who align their makeup with socialist lifestyles, claiming that this preserves the distinctive beauty of North Korean women. This approach indirectly con-trols and regulates women’s makeup culture while also encouraging their voluntary participation. The cosmetics policy aims to meet women’s preferences and provide them with a tangible incentive to actively contribute to the advancement of socialism. The primary objective of this policy is to promote a positive image of the supreme leaders and achieve the goals of gift politics. The study aims to enhance understanding of North Korea’s makeup culture and cosmetics policy, thereby contributing to the ex-pansion of knowledge about North Korean women and society.
Abstract
