초록

How do external security threats influence internal voter turnout? This paper argues that countries that have experienced security threats exhibit higher voter turnout than those that have not. This is because previous research on security threats and voter turnout has primarily focused on the effect of terrorism on electoral outcomes at sub-national levels. As a result, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of how foreign territorial threats influence domestic voter turnout at the national level. To test argument, this study aims to assess the impact of security threats on voter turnout across 145 countries from 1950 to 2021, utilizing a country-year time series cross-sectional dataset. The results indicate that the occurrence of security threats in the previous year increases the country’s voter turnout.
