Abstract
This study is an empirical analysis of the determining factors of foreign workers’ remittances to their home country. Workers with the following status of sojourn are able to work in Korea: Non-professional Employment(E-9), Work and Visit(H-2), Professional Staff(E-1∼E-7). The determinants of remittances by the status of sojourn are analyzed using 2019 Survey on Immigrants’ Living Conditions and Labour Forces. According to the analysis, firstly, marital status and status of household members have a considerable impact on how much is remitted. If foreign workers are not living with a spouse or children in Korea, they wire much more money than people who are not married or living with family in Korea. Secondly, the occupancy type of the house that foreign workers live in has significant impact on remittance. That is, workers who live in the place provided by the company send even more money home. By saving living or housing expenses, they can support for family or relatives living in their home country. Lastly, workers who were never employed in their home country or earned less money prior to coming to Korea affect remittance considerably. From these results, we suggest that the immigration policies concerning immigrants’ family members and reducing the housing expenses need to be considered.
