제주 정체성과 근대성에 대한 철학의 문제들

철학에서 정체성(identity)은 “동일성(同一性)”이라는 개념과 연관되어 있다. 동일성이란 ‘그 밖의 차별성을 포함하는 것이면서 일시적인 것’이다. 이를 전제로 제주 정체성에 관한 논의들을 탐라와 제주, 그리고 현재로 구분하고, 각각을 잃어버린 기억, 경계인의 시선, 근대인의 욕망이라는 철학적 주제로 치환하여 검토해보았다. 이 세 주제가 제주의 공시/통시/현시로서 지금도 동시적으로 포개지고 있다는 것이 이 연구의 출발점이기 때문이다. 우선 탐라 천년의 정체성은 고대 해양도서국가라는 지정학적 위치와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있는데, 고대 한국보다는 대만이나 오키나와와 지정학적 동일성을 확보하고 있다. 다음으로 제주 천년의 정체성은 한국의 변방이라는 지역적, 심리적 경계와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있는데, 그 시선은 국가 질서 안으로 향할 때는 절해고도의 유배지, 밖으로 향할 때는 이상향으로 양분되었다. 마지막으로 현실 제주의 정체성은 ‘모던’을 둘러싼 욕망의 실현과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있고, 그것은 기억투쟁으로 이어지고 있다. 제주의 정체성은 도서국가로서의 독자성과 변방으로서의 부속성이 교직되고 있다는 데서 출발해야 한다. 이 점은 동아시아 역사에 탐라왕국이 등장한 이래 병합 과정, 또는 근대국민국가수립과정에서 지속적으로 동일성의 원리로 작동했다. 따라서 제주의 정체성은 바다를 경계로 한 ‘한국의 경계 너머의 경계’로서 오래된 미래의 시간과 장소를 재현하는 실천의 장으로 기능해왔고, 할 것이라는 데서 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
Identity in philosophy is associated with the concept of “oneness.” Oneness is not ‘totally identical’ but ‘the same in some respects,’ and therefore ‘includes differentiation of others and is temporary.’ On the premise of this, discussions on the identity of Jeju were divided into Tamra, Jeju, and the present time, and each of them was replaced with a philosophical theme of lost memories, the gaze of the marginal man, and the desire of modern people. It is the starting point of this study that these three topics are still simultaneously being laid synchronically, diachronically, and presently. First of all, Tamra’s millennial identity is closely linked to its geopolitical position as an ancient maritime island state. In this regard, Tamra’s millennial memory secures geopolitical oneness with Taiwan or Okinawa rather than ancient Korea. Next, Jeju’s millennial identity is closely linked to the regional and psychological boundaries of the Korean border areas. Considering this point, Jeju’s millennial gaze was divided into the place of exile of the isolated island when directed into national order and utopia when directed outward. Finally, the identity of Jeju in reality is closely linked to the realization of the desire surrounding ‘modern,’ which leads to a memory struggle. The identity of Jeju should start from the fact that its independence and attachment as an island state are being involved. Since the advent of the Tamra Kingdom in East Asian history, this point has continued to work as a principle of oneness in the process of amalgamation or establishing a modern national state. Consequently, the identity of Jeju can be found in that it has served as a venue for action to recreate the time and place of the old future as the “Boundary Beyond the Boundary of Korea” with the sea boundary.
