초록
Wallace Stevens, in the age of disbelief, thought that the art in general including poetry and painting might be a kind of a compensation for what had been lost. Accordingly he tried to create God on earth through his poetry and poetics. This endeavor is basically based on the organic viewpoint from which he recognizes spirituality immanent in nature. His viewpoint of nature is closely related with the oriental poetics based on the organic viewpoint of nature. This paper explores the relationship between poetry and painting focusing on the essay “The relations between poetry and painting” collected in The Necessary Angel, thus ultimately investigating the elements and characteristics of the oriental poetics found in his poetry and theory of poetry. As WJ.T. Mitchell and Zhaoming Quian indicate, Stevens' significant landscape poems reveal the aesthetic characteristics represented by oriental landscape paintings, which is ultimately understood as an endeavor torepresent otherness in an intricate way. What he seeks to explore includes not only passage to the other genre (the visual) but also passage to the other age (the past) and the other culture (the orient). The overcoming of otherness defined by these characteristics may serve, in the last analysis, as an excellent example to prove the aspects of the oriental poetics Stevens tries to represent through his poetry.
