이청준 문학과 ‘한’(恨) - 「남도 사람」 연작을 중심으로

Abstract

This paper aims to explain the emotion of ‘Han’ depicted in Yi Chong-jun's works from the psychoanalytic point of view, focusing on the ‘Southern Men’ series. ‘Han’, which is known as a passion peculiar to Korea, more specifically to Namdo, can be elucidated partly by the Freudian theory of ‘sublimation’. The major characters of ‘Southern Men’ sublimate their unfilled incestuous desire through ‘Sori’(Korean traditional song). Han, however, has some aspects which cannot be explained by sublimation theory, and the goal of this unique passion is not the fulfillment of the desire. Rather, the characters of ‘Southern Men’ series gain the power of their songs by delaying the moment of the fulfillment on purpose. The constant delay of the fulfillment of the desire, not the surrogate fulfillment, is the essence of ‘Han.’ It seems that ‘the temporal durability' and ‘forgiveness,’ which ‘Han’ bears in itself, is a peculiar case which is cannot be explained by the general principle of the economics of Libido. This paper affirms that it is from this point that the ethics of Yi Chong-jun’s works arises.
