Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the changes of the English arts & crafts movement embraced by the Americans. William Morris, the leader of the English arts & crafts movement, suggested handicraft and the ‘ideal factory’ as an alternative to the problems by the Industrial Revolution. Americans accepted Morris's ideal and produced artworks for the beautification of home, but they accepted parts only for the industrial production. This was due to that they embraced the arts and crafts movement following the needs of consumers and markets, including corporate capitalism, democratic design and home hygiene after the second industrial revolution. Consequently, Gustav Stickley's ‘New Furniture’ approaching the realization of Morris' ideal. Furthermore, Irene Sargent and the Roycroft changed Morris's ideal for the joy of labor as a means of personal healing.
