초록

This paper deals with the mission thought of Henry Gerhard Appenzeller(1858-1902) by analyzing his mission reports, diaries, and letters from the perspective of phenomenology of religion. Appenzeller was born as descendent of German immigration family who belonged to Reformed Church in the USA. During his undergraduate study, however, he was converted to Methodism in order to expose himself to more emotional and comfortable environment. His open mind to other denominations helped him to have good relations with other missionaries and local leaders in Korean mission field. Appenzeller was the first Methodist missionary who arrived in Korea, 1885. He founded the modern school which Korean king, Gojong named as ‘Pai Chai Hak Dang’ which means a School for training useful men. Appezeller devoted himself to educational works and Bible translation. Therefore, his students were hired as government officials after graduating from school. He received the linguistical supports from indigenous Koreans in the process of Bible translation and missionary works. Though he started indirect mission to Korea like other Protestant missionaries, he always paid more attention to the possibilities of direct ways to transmit Christian message to Koreans than to social transformation through education and medicine. Appenzeller wanted to found ‘Seoul University’ by developing Pai Chai Hak Dang and add theological education to his school. After completing two terms of missionary service, he accidentally drowned in the West Sea. It is said that he tried to save Koreans when his ship was going down. His heroic story still gives Korean Christians a model of missionary, who sacrifices oneself for religious value and meaning.
