Abstract
Climate change is having a negative impact on economies around the world. As warming air and sea temperatures increase the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, the potential costs of these impacts rise. In December 2015, over 192 countries committed to reducing domestic greenhouse gas emissions. This signaled a collective commitment to aim to reduce greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions sufficiently to limit global warming to two degrees Celsius. The financial sector is waking up to climate change--first and foremost because the impact of extreme weather events can have devastating financial and human impacts. Financial institutions such as banks and pension funds have become one of the most ubiquitous influences in modern economies, mobilizing capital resources for new development in the real economy, brokering financial transactions, and managing investment risks. If risk has been reduced, institutional investors can consider investment in climate finance. Incentives should be implemented in order to stimulate the growth of the green energy market and encourage institutional investment. A balance will be important between firmness of the financial system and the building of climate finance.
