종교체험의 사회화: 구한말 한성감옥의 옥중 개종 체험 사례를 중심으로

이 논문은 구한말 지식인들의 옥중 개종 체험 사례에 대한 분석을 바탕으로, 개인의 종교체험이 어떻게 종교의 사회적 영역을 확장하는 데 기여하는지 알아보고자 한다. 독립협회 사건 등에 연루되어 한성감옥에 투옥되었던 관료 출신의지식인들이 1903년 경 집단적으로 기독교에 입교하게 된 데에는 신비체험이 결정적인 역할을 했다. 종교체험은 체험자를 통해 사회적으로 표출되며, 이를 통해 종교 자체도 자신의 영역을 확장한다. 구한말 지식인들의 종교체험의 영향은기도와 학습 등 개인적인 영역에서부터 전도와 교육, 구국 운동의 영역에 이르기까지 다양하게 나타났다. 체험자들의 활동은 체험의 계기나 성격에 따라 다소다른 양상을 보였다. 이승만과 이상재처럼 체험 당시에도 민족의 위기 상황을인식하고 있던 경우 기독교 중심의 구국 활동을 전개했고, 김정식과 같이 개인적인 상황과 깊이 연관된 종교체험을 한 경우 신자 개개인의 배경과 구원을 목표로 하는 활동을 전개하는 양상을 보인다.
Abstract
This Paper aims to investigate how individual religious experiences, based on the analysis of cases of religious conversion experiences among late Joseon intellectuals, contribute to the expansion of the social realm of religion. The intellectuals, who had been imprisoned in Hanseong Prison collectively converted to Christianity around 1903, with mystical experiences playing a decisive role in this process. Religious experiences are socially manifested through the experiencers, and as a result, religion itself extends its own sphere. Furthermore, the activities of the experiencers exhibited somewhat varying patterns depending on the catalyst or nature of the experience. In cases where individuals were aware of the national crisis, they engaged in patriotic activities with a Christian focus, while those whose experiences were deeply intertwined with personal circumstances pursued activities aimed at salvation.
