Abstract

The earliest known genre painting which the seventeenth-century Dutch genre painter Johannes Vermeer produced is Procuress of 1656, which was so to say the turning point in his early career. To create Procuress that shows a brothel scene as its theme, Vermeer referred to works of the so-called Dutch Caravaggists, active in Utrecht in the 1620s, as important models. First of all, Vermeer who appears to have kept the place for the painting’s installation in mind did not define the message the painting conveyed to viewers, leaving it ambiguous. In this way, Procuress could act as a medium that offered its viewers the opportunity to communicate with the image on the one hand and with each other on the other.
