포스트휴머니즘과 사이보그의 혼종성: 카르멘 보우요사의 『지상의 천국들 Cielos de la tierra』과 『완벽한 소설 La novela perfecta』을 중심으로

멕시코 소설가 카르멘 보우요사의 『지상의 천국들 Cielos de la tierra』(1997)과 『완벽한 소설 La novela perfecta』(2006)은 포스트휴먼 시대를 마주한 인간의 양가적 감정을 고스란히 반영한다. 소설은 ‘혼종성(Hybridity)’이 강조된 사이보그를 재현하며 기계와 인간이 물리적으로 결합되는 순간 기계가 모든 것을 통제할 지도 모른다는 인간의 근원적 불안감을 담아내면서도 복합적이고, 다중적이고, 유동적인 주체로서 포스트휴먼의 긍정적 가치를 강조한다. 전통적인 인간의 몸이 유럽남성중심주의를 바탕으로 한 성적 양극화와 젠더 이분법을 상징한다면, 혼종성이 강조된 사이보그의 그로테스크한 몸은 이원론의 지배에서 주체를 탈식민화한다. 본고는 보우요사가 재현한 혼종성이 강조된 사이보그가 어떻게 인간-기계의 결합의 과도기적 상태를 강조하여 기술적 타자와 인간 사이의 균형에 대해 고민하는지를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 본고는 소설에 나타나는 사이보그가 어떻게 물질/비물질의 경계를 흐리며, 사이보그의 혼종성이 강조된 신체가 어떻게 인간의 생물학적 몸의 의미로부터 탈주하는지 살펴본다. 마지막으로 본고는 인간이 기계와 구분되는 지점을 역사적 글쓰기와 창조적 글쓰기를 통해 찾으려는 등장인물들의 행위를 살펴보며, 포스트휴먼 시대 인간적 가치에 대해 검토한다.
Abstract
Mexican novelist Carmen Boullosa's Cielos de la tierra (1997) and La novela perfecta (2006) reflect the ambivalence of human in the post-human era. The novels explore the positive value of the post-human as a complex, multifaceted, and fluid subject, highlighting the cyborg's hybridity while containing the risk that control might be given to the machine, the moment machine and human are physically merged. While the traditional human body symbolizes sexual polarization and gender dichotomy based on Eurocentrism, the hybridity of cyborg decolonizes the subject in the domination of dualism. This paper focuses on how the 'hybridity' of cyborg represents the transitional state of the human-machine union and discusses the balance between the technological others and human. Also, this paper examines how cyborgs blurred the boundary between material and immaterial and how the hybrid body changed the symbolic meaning of the biological body of humans. Lastly, this paper illustrates the distinction between human and machines through historical and creative writing to find the unique values of human in the post-human era.
