Abstract
This study aimed to examine the narrative of Lauren Olamina, the protagonist in Parables of Octavia Butler, and the way she fulfills the Destiny of her imaginative religion, Earthseed, for the future in the reality of dystopia. The form of a postapocalyptic novel has a paradox that describes a dystopic world and contains utopian hope at the same time. As a spiritual leader, she develops her utopian vision of Earthseed as a new moral and social paradigm to survive the postapocalyptic period. Although she has a unique birth defect of hyperempathy with other’s feelings, it becomes a kind of ability that makes her share others’ emotions. And the belief system of Earthseed places human existence within a biocentric doctrine and natural evolution, which can be called posthuman. Earthseed’s GodisChange doctrine makes an effort to transform the apocalyptic reality into a habitable world by accepting flexibility and changeability for survival. In conclusion, Butler’s Parables serves as a warning to the present to make a better future because she criticizes the realities by representing imaginative dystopian images of existing social problems and systems.
