Abstract
In this study, long-term averages and anomalies of cardinal directional temperature lapse rate (TLR) extracted from recent decadal (2001~2010) climatic data observed at automatic weather stations are examined to understand the characteristics of vertical temperature structures along each aspect of Halla mountain. Analyses of monthly precipitation and TLR average values show that there exists an inverse relationship between monthly precipitation amount and monthly average TLR. As a result, in the months between May and July, the TLRs range between -0.46~0.47°C/100m which are as low as wet adiabatic lapse rate, while those in the months between December and February increase up to -0.70~0.75°C/100m. TLRs in the southern slope of the mountain are greater by 0.20°C/100m than those in the northern slope. Inter-annual time series of daily TLRs vary within the range of ±0.20°C/100m from their long-term averages. The TLR is not constant with height but greater between coastal regions and middle mountain regions up to 19°C/100m compared to those between coastal regions and high mountain regions. Moreover, the reduction pattern of the TLR with height is more obvious in winter and spatially along the southern slope of Halla mountain. These findings can be used as basis information to prepare better strategies for mountain leisure activities, mountain road system managements, and subalpine ecosystem conservation.
