Abstract

For bioclimatic studies, the present study is intended to monitor the blooming time and flower shedding time of indicator species in the arboretum of Gyeongsangnam-do located in the southern part of Korea and analyze the results in order to establish bio-geographic long-term prediction/management systems, predict/manage the time points of changes in plants’ growth and development environments in advance and provide the results as basic data for climatic influence evaluation. The indicator plants were monitored from three years from 2008 to 2010. Based on the results, it was identified that except for magnolias and bridal wreaths, most plants bloomed 4-27 days earlier in 2009 and 3-16 days later in 2010. Average temperatures from January through April were compared. Based on the results, the average temperatures were 6.2˚C in 2008, 7.0˚C in 2009 and 4.9˚C in 2010 and thus the temperature in 209 was the highest. The reason why magnolias and bridal wreaths showed differences in blooming time from other species is considered to be the effects of temporary low temperatures immediately before blooming, moisture stress, environmental characteristics and physiological phenomena. As for durations of blooming, contrary to the expectation that the durations would be longer in 2009 since blooming time was earlier in 2009, changes in a certain pattern were not shown. The reason for this is considered to be different temperatures, humidity and climates suitable for growth and development by plant species. Therefore, comparative studies by plant species through long-term climate monitoring are considered necessary.
