서양 선교사의 사서(四書) 번역사에 대한 기초적 고찰

이 논문은 동서 문화 교류의 일면을 밝히기 위한 기초연구로, 예수회 선교사부터 개신교 선교사 제임스 레게까지의 사서(四書) 번역서를 소개하고 각 번역서의 특징 및 계승, 발전 양상을 고찰하였다. 예수회 선교사는 중국 경전 번역에 가장 뜨거운 관심을 보였다. 그들은 중국 전통의 윤리, 철학, 문화, 사상에 주목하였으며 그 기반이 경전, 즉 사서라는 점을 인식하였다. 루이지에리, 마테오리치, 인토르체타, 다 코스타, 쿠플레, 노엘 등의 여러 예수회 선교사가 사서 번역 프로젝트의 임무를 완수하였으며, 예수회 선교사의 번역서는 계승 양상을 보인다. 예수회는 적응주의 선교 노선을 택하여 그리스도교의 토착화에 힘썼고, 따라서 사서 번역서는 중국을 이해하는 창이며, 선교 방법의 일환이었다. 그들이 서양에 알린 공자 철학은 볼프, 라이프니치의 계몽주의 철학에 영향을 미친다. 한편, 개신교 선교사들의 경우 유교 사상에 근거하여 그리스도교를 전파하고자 하는 열정은 사그라들었다. 마쉬맨, 제임스 레게는 사서 원문을 온전히 번역하고 역대 주석 및 언어, 문자에 대한 상세한 설명을 보충하여 독자들의 텍스트 이해를 도왔다. 콜리는 유교 비판의 입장에서 사서를 번역하였다. 개신교 선교사의 번역서는 당시 유럽에서 발아한 중국학 형성과 연관성을 보이며 선교 목적의 범위를 넘어서서 서양 중국학의 형성에 영향을 미친다.
Abstract
This study was a preliminary study aimed to identify an aspect of cultural exchange between the East and West. This study introduced the translations of the Four Books by Jesuit missionaries and the Protestant missionary James Legge and examined the characteristics and significance of each translation. The Jesuit missionaries showed the greatest interest in translating the Chinese classics. They were interested in the traditional Chinese ethics, philosophy, culture, and philosophical ideas and acknowledged that the classics, that is, the Four Books, were at the basis of such ideas. The Society of Jesus chose to take the adaptationist approach and made an effort to indigenize Christianity, and the translation of the Four Books was a window to understand China and a part of a missionary strategy. A number of Jesuit missionaries participated in the translation of the Four Books, and the translation by Jesuit missionaries displayed aspects of succession as they were based on group projects. The Confucian philosophy the Jesuit missionaries introduced to the Western world later influenced the philosophers of the Enlightenment, such as Wolff and Leibniz. On the other hand, the Protestant missionaries aimed to convey the meaning of the original Four Books rather than engaging in missionary work based on Confucianism. They helped readers understand the texts by providing detailed descriptions of Chinese commentaries, as well as the Chinese language and characters. The translations by the Protestant missionaries were related to the formation of Chinese studies in Europe at the time, and their translations went beyond the scope of missionary work and influenced the formation of Chinese studies in the Western world.
