Abstract

The historical semantics which succeeds to the hermeneutics from a critical perspective recognizes ‘Neuzeit’ as a temporal unit. Considering the historicity of modern consciousness as expressive of some specific conditions of the world, the historical semantics reveals the proofs of ‘Neuzeit’ which is linguistically constructed. Its task is not different from that of conceptual history in that it also explores the linguistic construction of temporal experiences. Reinhart Koselleck’s project of conceptual history provides a model for us. He regards conceptual history as ‘a semantics of main concepts’ both signalling and leading the changes of the times. This methodological premise renders prominent the prospective concepts referring to time which is ‘accelerating of its own accord’ in the selection of the items for the dictionary; for example, concepts like history, progress, revolution, republicanism, democracy, civil society, constitution, liberalism, etc. These political and social concepts come to gain new semantics from the elements of mobility and accelerating nature inherent in them. As a result, the historical presentation of ‘Neuzeit’ not only extends its methodological scope but also acquires a chance of self-examination in its epistemology. These modern concepts show an orientation toward the future but include some traditional elements at the same time. How is this doublesidedness to be explained? Conceptual history does not answer this question quite well. Metaphor is worthy of notice in this context, which can supplement the propositions of conceptual history. Metaphor is a historical testimony which, like concepts, can act as an index. Indeed, it can deliver meanings more primitive than those of concepts. The study of metaphor is appropriate for the symbolic system which underlies some ideology of the period or political act. The history of metaphor can bring us one step closer to the constituents of meaning existing as temporary and unspecified in ‘the front yard of conceptual formation’. The more a society falls behind in going through enlightenment ― eventually, many traditional elements underlie the formation of modern concepts in it ― the more vivid and primitive the history the semantic horizon of metaphor can offer becomes. When conceptual history and the propositions of metaphorical study supplement each other and maintain their strained relations at the same time, some new heuristic foresight will show itself from the combination.
