초록

Seoul has recently experienced a rapid increase in ozone concentrations and extreme heat events. This study analyzed the short-term health impacts of high-concentration ozone and compared these results with the short-term impacts of heatwave using the mortality data occurred from 2001 to 2019 in Korea. The results respectively showed that the relative risk of all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality increased by 1.0021 (1.0006-1.0036), 1.0033 (1.0020-1.0064) and 1.0050 (1.0001-1.0099) with the increase above 60ppb ozone concentration. We also found that the recent years (2011-2019) represented a higher relative risk of ozone compared to the past years (2001-2010). In contrast, we observed an opposite trend from heatwaves, showing a higher relative risk in the past years (2001-2010) than the recent years (2011-2019). Furthermore, we found that the recent that the recent increase in high-concentration ozone seems to be related to the reduction of nitrogen dioxide through fine dust reduction policies. Our study suggests that more active response policies managing both fine dust and ozone are needed to improve air quality in Seoul.
