본 논문은 주로 정치·사회적 측면에서 다루어진 사파티스타 운동에 관한 연구에서 상대적으로 관심을 덜 받았던 문학과 서사 영역에 주목하고자 한다. 이를 위해 사파티스타 서사의 대표작 중 하나인 『마르코스와 안토니오 할아버지: 부사령관 마르코스가 들려주는 하늘과 땅, 사람의 이야기』(2001)를 분석한다. 이 작품에서 화자인 마르코스는 안토니오 할아버지의 목소리를 통해 원주민들의 이야기를 전한다. 이렇게 원주민을 ‘재현’하는 권위를 포기하고 ‘중재자’의 위치가 되어 하위주체에게 발화 공간을 내어주는 실험은 기존의 인디헤니스모(indigenismo) 문학이 지닌 한계를 극복하려는 시도로 읽힌다. 또한, 안토니오의 이야기는 원주민의 과거를 기억하는 방식으로 이상과 대안 세계를 형상화한다. 하지만 단순한 과거로의 회귀가 아닌 현대적 관점에서 마야 신화의 재구성을 통해 비원주민 세계를 포함하여 새로운 공존과 동반이라는 유토피아를 상상하고 있다. 이 과정에서 언어는 ‘재현’의 도구가 아닌 ‘창조’의 도구로, 서구의 언어로는 담아낼 수 없는 새로운 의미와 대안적 가치를 구성하는 역할을 한다.
Abstract
This study explores Zapatista’s literary narratives that have received relatively little academic attention as opposed to its political and social dimensions. For this it analyzes Los relatos del viejo Antonio(2001), one of the representative narratives by the Zapatistas. As a mediator, subcommander Marcos delivers the stories of indigenous people by abandoning the right of representing the subaltern and conceding to old Antonio a space of storytelling. This experimental writing can be understood as an effort to overcome the limits of indigenismo. And Antonio’s stories configure alternative images of an ideal society by way of remembering the indigenous past. However, it does not mean a simple return to the past; rather it re-imagines a Utopia shaped by the logic of coexistence and friendship while rebuilding Mayan myths from the contemporary perspectives. Meanwhile the language, not as venue of “representation” but as of “creation,” takes an active role in conceiving new images and alternative values, unable to be imagined in Western languages.
