초록

Ths study investigated the spatiotemporal changes in heatwave days based on various definitions using 55 weather stations spanning from 1971 to 2020 in South Korea. The study analyzed heatwave days based on three epidemiological thresholds and a percentile threshold: 1) daily maximum temperature ≥ 33°C (HW_tmax), 2) daily maximum apparent temperature ≥ 33°C (HW_at), 3) combined criteria of daily maximum temperature ≥ 33°C and nighttime minimum temperature ≥ 25°C (HW_com), and 4) 95th percentile of daily maximum temperature (HW_95p). The results showed that the number of heatwaves has elevated compared to the past. We especially observed a more notable trend in the recent 30 years (1991-2020), representing increases in all different types of heat waves. We, however, found some variations in occurrence periods and areas. We temporally found more cases from May to September for HW_tmax and HW_95p, from June to September for HW_at, and from July to August for HW_com. In addition, we spatially observed more cases in inland areas for HW_tmax and HW_at, coastal areas for HW_at, and large cities for HW_com. The study emphasizes the need for differentiated policies based on heatwave types. This research provides essential data for developing heatwave response policies and disaster preparedness strategies.
