Abstract
The main goal of this study is to assess the self image that Juan Alfonso de Baena conveys in Cancionero, that he compiled in around 1430. This compilation shows that Baena was an expert in troubadour poetry and a central node in the network of relationships between many contemporary Castilian poets. Moreover, he undoubtedly was a humble and self-effacing editor. It is fair to say that he did not attempt to aggrandize himself to his readers but was instead focused on praising the Trastamaran royalty through the dissemination of the greatest poetry of the Castilian major poets. Why did Baena, who was the Castilian royal scribe, place his own poetic composition in the latter part of the compilation, in a relatively inconspicuous position? He almost seems to have been obsessed with not giving the impression of being a heroic protagonist. How else can we explain his intentional modesty in the collection? To study Baena’s positioning of himself and the image he conveys of himself in this compilation, I employed a double methodology that combines a literary-philological perspective and a digital literature analysis. Specifically, I used Gephi 0.9.2 for the visualization of the network of relationships of the Trastamaran dynasty’s poets found in Baena’s collection. With this exploration software, it was possible to measure Baena’s differing forms of centrality in the collection, including degree, closeness, and betweenness centrality, among others. Baena’s closeness centrality shows us his average social distance from all other poets in Cancionero; meanwhile, his betweenness centrality is a measure of the amount of influence he had over the dynamics in the network of relationships. I believe that these two results, which this study illustrates in graph form, allow us to deduce Baena’s relationships with other poets and his functional roles in fifteenth century Castilian high society.
