에두아르도 멘도사의 추리소설 5부작에 나타난 네오바로크 미학 연구: 오마르 칼라브레세의 이론을 중심으로

바로크는 17세기 스페인문학을 대표하며, 당시 유럽예술의 주류로서 문학 이외에도 건축, 음악, 의상, 춤 등 예술장르 전반에 걸쳐 광범위하게 적용되었던 문예사조이다. 바로크는 정적이며 균형, 질서, 엄숙함, 인간중심 등으로 요약되는 르네상스에 반하여 동적이고 과장되며, 무질서함, 그로테스크, 애매모호함 등을 특징으로 하고 있다. 17세기 황금세기를 구가하던 스페인의 바로크 문학은 20세기에 접어들면서 스페인 ‘27세대’와 중남미의 모데르니스모 운동에 힘입어 과거의 계보를 잇는 네오바로크의 부활을 알렸다. 그러나 스페인의 네오바로크 미학은 20세기 초에 아방가르드 예술사조와 맞물려 시 분야를 중심으로 잠시 부각되었으나 20세기 중반부터는 주로 중남미 현대소설의 핵심적인 경향으로 간주되었다. 그렇다면 바로크의 종주국이었던 스페인에서는 네오바로크 소설이 존재하지 않는 것일까? 멘도사의 추리소설 5부작시리즈는 비천한 신분의 못생긴 이름 없는 탐정을 주인공으로 하며 왜곡, 변형, 과잉, 도착, 증식, 반복, 불안정함, 불분명함 등의 바로크 미학의 요소들을 많이 가지고 있다. 칼라브레세가 언급한 것처럼 현대문화에서 나타나는 공통적인 표현양식을 포괄하는 용어를 네오바로크미학으로 지칭한다면, 이 시리즈 또한 네오바로크 소설이 될 수 있는 충분한 가능성을 가지고 있다. 필자는 이 연구를 통해 지금까지 주로 문학･사회학적 맥락에서 다루어져 온 멘도사 연구의 지평을 확장하고, 더 나아가 이 연구가 20세기 중반 이후 중남미 소설에 비해 상대적으로 저평가된 네오바로크 문학으로써의 스페인 소설의 가치와 위상을 재평가할 수 있는 계기가 되기를 바래본다.
Abstract
Baroque represents Spanish literature in the seventeenth century. It was the mainstream of European art at that time, and it was widely applied to different art forms, including architecture, music, costumes, and dance, in addition to literature. Baroque features are dynamic and exaggerated, characterized by disorder, grotesque and ambiguity. These are contrary to the features of the Renaissance, static, balance, order, solemnity, and humanity. The Baroque literature of Spain, which took place during the golden age, entered the twentieth century and leaded to the revival of Neobaroque, which was connected with the genealogy of the past with the 27 generations of Spain and the Modenismo movement of Latin America. However, Neobaroque aesthetics in Spain, with the avant-garde artist at the beginning of the 20th century, emerged briefly in the field of poetry. If so, doesn't Neobaroque fiction exist in Spain, a baroque dominant country? The protagonist of Mendoza's Anonymous Detective Series is an ugly and unnamed detective of low status. Mendoza´s novels have many elements of Baroque aesthetics such as distortion, transformation, excess, perversion, proliferation, repetition, instability, unclearness. As Calabrese mentioned, if the term encompassing the common forms of expression in modern culture is referred to as Neobaroque aesthetics, these series also have the potential to become a Neobaroque novel. Through this study I hope to broaden the horizon of Mendoza's research, which is mainly dealt with in the literary and sociological context. Moreover, Spanish novels have been underestimated as Neobaroque literature since the mid-twentieth century compared to Latin American novels. I also hope that this study will be an opportunity to reassess the value and status of Spanish novels as Neobaroque literature.
