세르누다의 『현실과 욕망』에 관한 디지털 인문학적 분석 시도: 전기 시와 후기 시의 어휘적 특성을 중심으로

본 연구는 루이스 세르누다의 주저인 『현실과 욕망 La Realidad y el Deseo』 을 구성하는 11권의 시집, 총 283편의 시 작품들을 스페인 내전으로 인한 망명을 기점으로 전기와 후기로 구분하여, 두 시기의 시에 사용된 어휘의 실질적인 차이를 계량적으로 판별해내고자 하는 목적을 띤다. 이를 위해 개별적 시 작품에 대한 분석법으로 기존에 제기되었던 ‘꼼꼼히 읽기(close reading)’와 대비되는, Franco Moretti가 주창한 ‘멀리서 읽기(distant reading)’를 시도하고자 한다. 구체적으로 본고에서는 프로그램 언어인 R을 사용하여 빈도 분석, 감성 분석과 공기어 분석 등 다양한 분석을 실행하여 세르누다의 전기 시와 후기 시 사이에 발견되는 시어의 특성을 비교하고 그 의미를 해석하고자 하였다. 그의 전기 시는 삶의 부조리와 모순에 대한 직접적이고 강렬한 부정적 언어가 특징적이었지만, 후기 시는 그것을 좀 더 관조적이고 실존적인 차원에서 성찰하는 언어들이라는 점에서 전기와 차별화되었다. 본 연구는 스페인어권 특정 작가의 구체적 작품에 대한 국내 첫 디지털 인문학적 분석으로, 특히 세르누다의 시에 대한 텍스트 마이닝은 국내외에서 처음 시도되었다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다. 아직은 초기 단계에 있는 디지털 인문학 연구는 향후 기술의 발전에 힘입어 더욱 정교하게 발전될 것으로 기대되기에 미력하나마 본 연구가 더 진전된 후속 연구를 위한 부표가 되기를 바란다.
Abstract
In this study, we have made a detailed quantitative analysis of Luis Cernuda’s La Realidad y el Deseo, the eleven-volume collection with 283 poems. This is an attempt to verify whether there are substantial differences between the lexical features used in his pre-exilic works and those in his post-exilic works, due to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Concretely we have adopted a data-driven method of “distant reading”, coined by Franco Moretti, in contrast to the traditional approach of “close reading”, which has been relied on so far to better understand individual works of poetry. To this end, several text mining analyses such as frequency analysis, sentiment analysis and co-occurrence analysis have been conducted. The results show that Cernuda’s pre-exilic poems are characterized by direct and intense negative language about the absurdity and contradiction of life, while his post-exilic poems use languages that reflected them on a more meditative and existential level. This study is the first attempt to analyze literary works in Spanish within the context of digital humanities in this country, and more importantly, it is the first attempt to use computational text mining methods on Cernuda’s poetry in the academic world. Digital humanities is still in its fledgling stage, but it is expected to advance even more precisely thanks to the rapid development of technology.
