초록

근대 이후 도시화의 과정과 그 성격은 발전의 경험과 긴밀한 상관성을 가져왔다. 유럽의 경우 19세기를 전후하여 산업화 혹은 공업화가 급진전 되는 과정에서의 인구 유입 효과(pull effect)가 도시화의 주된 요인 중 하나였다. 반면, 글로벌 남반구 지역의 경우 유럽과 같은 글로벌 북반구 지역과는 다른 경제 및 정치 발전의 경험이 있기 때문에, 그에 따른 도시화의 성격도 다르게 나타났다. 본 연구는 20세기 중반 본격적인 근대화 과정을 겪게 되는 페루 수도 리마의 도시화의 성격과 원인을 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 1535년 스페인 정복자들이 태평양 연안에 식민도시로 건설한 리마는 19세기 초 페루가 스페인으로부터 독립한 이후에도 공화국 수도로서의 지위를 유지했다. 이후 20세기 중반에 이르러 페루의 근대화 발전이 진행되면서 리마는 급진적인 도시화를 경험하게 된다. 본 연구는 20세기 중반 리마 도시화의 성격을 규정하는데 주된 동력을 제공한 바리아다(barriada)를 통해 도시화의 성격을 규명한다. 특히 1940~1960년대 사이 본격적인 근대화 발전을 시도한 페루 발전 모델의 구조적, 정치·사회적 성격을 분석함으로써, 이러한 원인이 리마의 도시화의 성격을 규정하는데 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는지 분석한다.

Abstract

Since the modern period, the process of urbanisation and its nature have brought close correlation with the experience of development. In Europe, the pull effect of industrialisation in the 19th century was one of the main factors of urbanisation. On the other hand, the Global South region has a different experience of economic and political development. Therefore, the nature of urbanisation has been different. This study aims to analyse the characteristics and causes of urbanisation in Lima, the Peruvian capital, which underwent a full-scale modernisation process in the mid-20th century. Founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors as a colonial city on the Pacific coast, Lima remained the capital of the republic after Peru gained independence from Spain in the early 19th century. As Peru went through modernisation in the mid-20th century, Lima experienced a rapid urbanisation. This study identifies the nature of urbanisation in Lima in the mid-20th century through the barriada, which provided the main impetus for defining the character. In particular, by analysing the structural, political, and social characteristics of the Peruvian development between the 1940s and 1960s, the study analyses how these characteristics defined the nature of urbanisation in Lima.
