Abstract

This study investigated university students’ life goal types and their characteristics. It also examined how well grit predicted career adaptability and life satisfaction for each goal type. A total of 487 university students responded to the questionnaire, and data were analyzed using a latent profile analysis and a latent class regression analysis. Results show that, first, according to the dimensions of life goal (i.e. self-focused, self-transcendent, extrinsic), there were four unobserved yet qualitatively different goal types exhibited by the subjects, such as high goals, low-goals, high intrinsic goals, and high extrinsic goals. Second, grit’s sub-factors (i.e., consistency of interest and perseverance of effort) positively predicted career adaptability and life satisfaction in general. Third, the overall influence of grit on career adaptability was relatively high, with perseverance of effort exhibiting a stronger predictive power than consistency of interest. Fourth, the degree to which grit significantly predicted career adaptability and life satisfaction differed according to the goal type.
